Still doing it by the book?
--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
2 Corinthians 3:6
We are all creatures of habit.
It stops us having to think about everything we are doing. We tend to sit in the same seats, eat the same meals, give pat answers to pat questions.
It’s also easier to live by a set of rules without having to question each individual action. But rules have limits. The Ten Commandments do not take us very far in determining the complexities of current medical ethics, for example.
Paul was the quintessential legalist, but when he encountered Jesus on the Damascus Road and was subsequently filled with the Spirit, he declared his old way as ‘rubbish’ in favour of a Spirit filled discernment.
The journey from letter to Spirit can be scary, like tight rope walking without a safety net. But it is life!
